With an area not very extensive and leaning on the south side to the albicastrense city, the village of Alcains (elevated to this condition on 12/11/1971) occupies a central position within the Municipality and appears embedded between the parishes of Póvoa de Rio Moinhos (to the Northeast), Lardosa (to the North), Escalos de Baixo and Escalos de Cima (the West). Accusing a topography in general somewhat bumpy, this village has as its main hydrographic course the Ribeira da Líria.
In the 19th century. XII this region was part of the Herdade da Açafa, the domains of D. Afonso Henriques. Later, D. Afonso III would eventually give it to the Order of the Templars, and its term would eventually be delimited at the end of the 19th century. On
the remote origins of Alcains, several archaeological finds testify to the human presence in a wide range of occupation, extending from prehistory to medieval times. From the Neolithic period are several polished stone axes found in the stations of Grulha and Lameira de Curia and currently guarding the Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum. In turn, Romanization is well documented in the remains found in Cabeço da Pelada, among which an oven and a votive ara dedicated to the deity Reve, dating from the 2nd century AD.
Rich in historical and religious heritage, Alcains has in the Solares de Alcains (of the Viscounts of Oleiros) and the Goulões (of the Viscounts of Idanha-a-Nova) its maximum architectural exponents, being classified as "Real Estate of Public Interest" by decree of 2002.
