The settlement of this parish dates back to the time of the first settlers going to S. Miguel, in the second half of the fifteenth century.
The toponym Ribeirinha derives from the watercourse that in this place has rarely had the torrential character, so frequent in the Azorean islands. Gaspar Frutuoso says: "it is called that, with the diminutive name, because Ribeira Grande, its neighbor, is smaller".
This settlement seems to have emerged at the same time or shortly after the beginning of the settlement of Ribeira Grande, in the last half of the fifteenth century.
Currently, Ribeirinha is the producer of many of the agricultural products sold in the markets of the cities of Ribeira Grande and Ponta Delgada.
It is worth mentioning Água das Lombadas, which is carbo-gaseous, in which bicarbonate and sodium ions predominate. Being oversaturated with carbon dioxide, they have a very pleasant acidic taste on the palate, not changing over time.
