The current designation was "Lands of Coyra". In the reign of D. João I the name of county appears, without the previous one being abandoned. There is evidence of the existence of an "old" foral, which has not yet been found, but to which even the "new" foral of D. Manuel seems to refer. This foral is april 13, 1515. At this time, the northern boundary of the county was the Minho River. During the Restoration War, this county was the center of military operations against Galicia and defense against the Spanish invasions. Here was fought the glorious battle, which became known in history for "Combats of the Lock" (1663). In this municipality was prepared the supply, not only of this army, but of some squares on the bank of the Minho River. Therefore, the court of King John IV granted him the designation of "Barn of the Minho".
The great cereal production continued through the centuries, until the mid-twentieth century, when the depletion of subsistence agriculture dictated its decline, which, from the 1960s onto that century, colonial war and mass emigration accentuated and concluded. The current name appears in the 70s of the nineteenth century, when the seat of the municipality was transferred from Mantelães to the parish of Paredes and was created the district, by aggregation of the names of the parish and the county.
