The toponymy of this parish - Matriz - is due to the fact that it is the mother parish of Ribeira Grande.
Its constitution, as a place or small parish, will date back to a time before the building of its main church, that of Our Lady of the Star, at the time of five hundred.
It is Gaspar Frutuoso, in his fourth book of "Saudade da Terra" who gives us the first information about this village: "The first vicar of this village and parish was Rodrigo Anes (...) has this parish of Our Lady of the Star suffragan the place of Rabo de Peixe and attached five hermitages, sc., of Our Lady of the Rosary, Santa Luzia, St. Andrew, St. Sebastian, Our Lady of Conception, apart from the Holy Spirit, which is a spitral for the poor and sick, situated next to the square, and apart a sumptuous monastery advocation of Jesus, above the spitral, not so rich in buildings, as in virtues of noble and virtuous religious, which he made in his own houses Pêro Roiz of the Chamber."
