Furnas is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Povoação, with 70.20 km² of area and 1,439 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 42.5 inhabitants per km². It is located east of Ponta Delgada and Lagoa and southeast of Ribeira Grande. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the south and mountains to the north.
The main economic activities are agriculture and tourism.
The Furnas are well known for their thermal waters, namely the calderas, the Poça da Beija and thermal pools. In addition, the Furnas are known for the Hotel Terra Nostra consisting of a natural pool of thermal waters and a magnificent botanical garden, the Terra Nostra Park and you can also visit the natural park where you can find some animals and some species of plants. It is also in Furnas that there is a lagoon, the Furnas Lagoon.
They are also traditional of Furnas, the cakes and the curious stew where the ingredients are cooked underground under the heat of the volcanoes (the meat takes about 5 to 6 hours and the cod about 3 to 4 hours). This highlights an exquisite taste.
This locality has one of the largest and most diverse botanical collections of the archipelago.
