With the fixation of sedentary communities in Beira Baixa, the first housing centers were constituted. An example of this, in the Region of Alcains, is the existence of some prehistoric places, such as tapirs and menires, and several of them go unnoticed by the marks of time itself and hidden to modernity.
During the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, in Alcains there was already a small village also linked to agriculture, but this community was already part of the commercial structures of one of the largest Empires in the history of Classical Antiquity. Until the 20th century, there was a Roman road in the vicinity of the Chapel of Santa Apolónia and, nowadays, it is still possible to find some Roman inscriptions made of stone and that are on display in the Mother Church of Alcains.
